Ettigounder (Samy) Ponnusamy
Director & Fellow - Green Chemistry

Ettigounder (Samy) Ponnusamy joined Sigma-Aldrich as a chemist in 1988 after his postdoctoral studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago and, in 2007, he helped found the company’s green chemistry team. In 2015, following the acquisition of Sigma-Aldrich by the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, which operates as MilliporeSigma in the U.S. and Canada, Samy continued his role of managing and expanding new green business opportunities, as well as research and development for greener alternatives.

In his role as Director & Fellow - green chemistry, Samy developed the unique DOZN™ system—a third party-validated/published green chemistry evaluator based on the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. Today, this tool plays an integral role in quantifying greener products for Merck and its customers both in industry and academia - having received a Top Project of the Year award by Environment + Energy Leader in 2020. Also, Samy is one of the recipients of Merck Technology Award 2021 and Sustainability Award 2022 from Chiesi, Italian Pharma Company for DOZN™.

Samy has more than 40+ years of experience managing new product developments—from bench scale through product launch—with many products showing sustained growth over time. He has extensive experience in applying green chemistry concepts across all disciplines of chemistry and polymer/organic chemistry, and process technology skills in the development of innovative biopolymers for drug-delivery applications.

Samy is the holder or co-holder of seven U.S. patents, and is the recipient of more than a dozen honors, including the Outstanding Scientist award from the Academy of Science in St. Louis (2011) and Fellow of the Academy of Science in St. Louis; the first-ever CEO award for Outstanding Achievements (2012); Sigma-Aldrich’s Global Citizenship awards (2008, 2009 and 2010); and Sigma-Aldrich’s Safety awards for eliminating the hazards in manufacturing polyamino acid polymers (2002 and 2008). Samy also received Sustainability Star recognition from ACS/GCI in May 2024. Samy served as co-chair for the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) Chemical Manufacturer’s Roundtable and is a member of the Polymer Chemistry and Polymeric Materials Science Division. He has also been selected/served as a judge for the U.S. Green Chemistry Challenge Award Program (2018, 2019, 2023 & 2024) by ACS/EPA, Serves as ACS GC&E Advisory Committee Member (2023 -2025). Samy served as a Leadership Committee Member for the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community (GCTLC) 2020 - 2023; currently serving as a GCTLC Advisory Committee Member 2024 – 2026 (by ACS GCI/Beyond Benign).

Also, Samy leads the new Greener Chemistry Consultancy Business Developments at MilliporeSigma. He is instrumental in expanding DOZN application to both virtual and in-lab curriculum to various academic institutions globally in collaboration. Also, Samy helped to launch Beyond Benign’s Organic and In-organic Labs with DOZN applications.

Samy earned his Ph.D. from the University of Madras. His thesis was titled “Polymer Chemistry: Syntheses and Studies of Certain Copolyesters of Terephthalic Acid and Diols,” and he is the co-author of 50+ related scientific articles.
