Titre : Forensics, Metabolomics, and Molecular Imaging by Mass Spectrometry.

La conférence sera prononcée par le professeur Facundo Fernández de la School of Chemistry and Biochemistry du Georgia Institute of Technology.

Résumé : Mass Spectrometry (MS) is one of the key analytical methods used to identify and characterize small quantities of biological molecules embedded in complex matrices.  Although MS has found widespread use, technical improvements in its instrumentation are needed to extend its application to the grand challenges that face the environmental, chemical and biomedical sciences. In this talk I present our progress towards the use of MS for diagnosing ovarian cancer, imaging algae metabolites in tissues, and rapidly detecting counterfeit drugs. I will also present a variety of other applications that benefit from the high information content provided by modern mass spectrometric experiments. More fundamental work involving finite element simulations and Schlieren imaging experiments of fluid dynamics at the atmospheric pressure interface of the mass spectrometer will be also presented, and complemented with results from the ionization of 'thermometer molecules' to measure the degree of ion activation during the ion generation process.
