Résumé

Host-microbe interactions have been studied for many decades, mostly through targeted analyses of host responses to infection. However, global studies of these interactions are indispensable if we are to truly understand their intricacies. In this talk, I will highlight our recent work using metabolomics to shed light on unappreciated interactions between mammals and their intestinal microbes, both commensals and pathogens. Our work indicates that small molecules represent an important, yet underappreciated, facet of the interactions between microbes and their hosts. Studying these molecules and the interactions dependent upon them will likely reveal a wealth of fundamental biological processes involved in human health and disease.
