Prof. Fadwa El-Mellouhi, Senior Scientist au Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), PO Box 5825, Doha, Qatar.

Nowadays, the integration of renewable energy to the electrical grid is facing multiple challenges such environmental impact and competitive cost. These challenges motivated research in photovoltaic energy generation and its storage, among others. For example, the photovoltaic field has witnessed a unique emergence for a new family of solar cell materials; namely hybrid perovskite solar cells. Within a span of few years, an efficiency above 22% was achieved, still commercialization needs to improve the perovskites’ intrinsic stability. Storing the generated solar energy constitute another challenge that called for the design of low cost and environmentally friendly materials for batteries aiming to reach high specific capacities. Here I will summarize our recent efforts in computationally designing active materials for energy generation and storage.
